Lishui Towns is one of the sub-sites of A Place Called Lishui. It covers the towns, subdistricts and villages of Lishui District, the traditional village lists, and the origins of place names together with the surnames and lineages recorded there.

Scope

Two entity types: place (towns, subdistricts, villages, communities and traditional villages) and article (place names, surnames, administrative history and surveys). The towns section holds the five subdistricts and three towns, each stating its unit type, seat, area and numbers of residents’ and villagers’ committees; the villages section holds villagers’ and residents’ committees together with the settlements on the traditional village lists; articles are written here. Only published entries appear, and nothing without a traceable source is published.

Sources

Sources are ranked: gazetteers and inscriptions; government pages, provincial approvals and the provincial housing department’s lists; statistical bulletins and academic papers; and press reports and site visits. Area, seat and committee counts follow the district government’s administrative divisions page only; where a second official figure exists, both are shown with their source and year. The traditional village lists follow the documents published by the provincial housing department and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, cited by batch and year. Source records are catalogued in the language of the original: the publisher is given in English as well, while the rights note and the citation locator stay in the original language, so that a reader can find the passage in the source itself.

Known gaps

Two divergences are set out as they stand rather than averaged away. First, the official count of provincial traditional villages is twelve (to the end of 2024) while ten can be identified by name; the names of the other two do not appear in the published lists. Second, the district area is given as 1,064 sq km on the administrative divisions page and 1,067 sq km on the district profile page; entries show both. Beyond that, the 118 villages and communities are not expected to be written at once: only those with usable sources are entered.

Validation

Every entry passes the content repository’s validation script before it is stored: required fields, controlled vocabularies, resolvable sources and relations, Chinese-English pairing and consistent proper names. A town or subdistrict must state its unit type, seat, area and committee counts; a village must have a parent pointing to a town or subdistrict that exists in this library; a stated traditional village listing must carry its batch and year and have a matching section in the body; and a stated surname must be supported by a sentence in the body.

Licence

The text of the entries is licensed CC BY 4.0: reuse and adaptation, including commercial use, require attribution only. The rights status of each source in the source layer is given in its own rights field and is not transferred by this licence.

Languages and themes

Chinese is served from the root and English from /en/, with page paths matching one to one, so switching language keeps you on the same page. The theme follows your system setting by default and can be switched by hand; the choice is stored in your browser and does not flash on reload.

Corrections

If you find a factual error, a dead link or an inconsistent rendering of a proper name, open an issue in the network’s repository, giving the entry ID and your evidence. Once checked, the entry is corrected and its updated field changed to that day.

How it is built

The site is static. Markdown from the content repository is rendered at build time; there is no database and no client-side framework. The filters, the search and the list paging all run on the generated pages. There is no timeline here: the administrative dates reach only as far as “Song” or “Ming”, so a timeline would be an axis mostly empty; the dates are given in an administrative history section of the body instead, and the filters run on unit type and on town or subdistrict.
