Ancestral Halls and Surnames in the Traditional Villages

All three follow one pattern: a settlement dominated by one or two surnames, with the ancestral hall of that surname surviving. Cangkou has three halls for three surnames, Rui, Fan and Qiu; Shishanxia and Zhujia have one each, for the Liu and the Zhu.

Basis and limits

Both sources are second-hand press reports: the Yangtse Evening Post report carries no publication date, and The Paper report is a local news item of 8 April 2020. Therefore:

• "A century old" and "some four hundred years ago" are the reports' own wording, approximations that this entry does not use as datings.
• The 1820 construction and the 2006 listing of the Liu family hall at Shishanxia are more specific but still come from press reports; the formal documents are not held in this library.
• Whether the villages hold ancestral halls not mentioned in the reports is not recorded in the sources used here.

The form, dimensions, protection grade and publication batch of these halls belong to the history site of this group. This entry offers only a cross-village summary; it neither repeats what the individual village entries already say nor stands in for the history site's treatment of the buildings.

Points of doubt

• None of the three halls has a first-hand basis such as an inscription or genealogy for its date of construction; a fuller account awaits sources.
• When the three surnames at Cangkou, the Liu at Shishanxia and the Zhu at Zhujia moved into these villages, and from where, is not recorded in the sources used here.
