The Traditional Village Lists of Lishui

Ten provincial entries identified by name, and two national ones

Checked village by village against the published lists of the provincial housing department and the Nanjing municipal government, ten traditional villages of Jiangsu in Lishui can be identified by name, alongside two Chinese traditional villages. A district reply gives twelve provincial villages to the end of 2024; the gap of two is set out in this entry.

The first batch named 107 villages in all, identified by the provincial department of housing and urban-rural development with the provincial departments of finance, natural resources, agriculture and rural affairs, and culture and tourism. The eighth batch named 70 villages, five of them in Nanjing.

The national list

The sixth batch of Chinese traditional villages, published on 20 March 2023 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and other departments, includes two villages in Lishui: Shitouzhai Village in Baima Town and Zhangjia Village in Hefeng Town. Both are the administrative villages of settlements that also appear on the provincial list, Lixiang and Zhujia respectively.

Ten identified by name against an official twelve

A district government reply of November 2025, giving figures to the end of 2024, records that the district has 2 Chinese traditional villages and 12 provincial traditional villages. Identified one by one from the published lists, this library finds 10 provincial traditional villages by name: four in the first batch, three in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth. The official total exceeds this by two.

The gap most probably lies in the sixth batch. That reply gives a total of five while naming only three, Tai Village, Luoshan and Yangjia Village in Sunjiaxiang, leaving two unnamed. Once those two names are established, 10 and 12 should reconcile. Until then both figures are presented side by side: the official 12 does not overwrite the 10, and the 10 does not deny the 12.

Points of doubt

  • The formal published document for the sixth provincial batch is not held in this library; both its names and its total rest on the district bureau's reply.
  • The seventh-batch report writes Shannan Village together with the former town name Honglan; the standard village name and its administrative village still need checking.
  • Whether the official figure of 12 refers to exactly the same set as the itemised lists, for instance whether it counts the administrative villages of the Chinese traditional villages, is not explained in any document held here.
